A group of children play at the beach. A woman appears, takes one of them, and leaves hastily. These could be familiar images that we all share, reflecting moments we've experienced. For the viewer unfamiliar with the characters and context, these images mark the beginning of a story. They see the beach, the girl, and the woman, but the images lack meaning on their own. Without more information, the viewer contributes meaning with their imagination. Thus, the same montage can become a drama, comedy, or surreal experience depending on the observer. The lack of context turns the montage into polysemic: so many viewers, so many stories.
